William Stankewicz, convicted in 2001 York County elementary school attack, found dead in prison

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — An inmate serving up to 264 years in a Luzerne County jail was pronounced dead on Monday.

According to the State Correctional Institution of Dallas, inmate William Stankewicz, 78, was found unresponsive in his cell on Nov. 27. He was pronounced dead at 7:41 a.m. 

Stankewicz was serving a 132-to-264-year sentence for a 2001 criminal homicide conviction from York County. Stankewicz wielded a machete and baseball bat at North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School, injuring 14, including 11 kindergarten students, two teachers and the school principal. 

He has been housed at SCI Dallas since May 2012. 

In accordance with state policy, Pennsylvania State Police were notified and will conduct an investigation. Stankewicz's official cause of death will be determined by the Luzerne County Coroner's Office.
