State Police investigate theft of water from hydrants in York County borough

The borough of Stewartstown said the theft of water from hydrants is "an ongoing problem" as York County Water continues to restrict non-essential water use.

STEWARTSTOWN, Pa. — State Police said they are investigating the theft of water from a fire hydrant in a southern York County borough.

The theft occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 in the borough of Stewartstown, according to State Police. The hydrant was located at the intersection of Hickory Road and North Barrens Road, police said.

The caller reported seeing two suspects stealing water from the hydrant, according to State Police.

Investigators have developed leads in the case and are continuing to look into it, police said.

Stewartstown purchases about half its water supply from York Water Company, which has imposed a mandatory restriction on non-essential water use in September. York County is the only county in Pennsylvania to be under a drought warning.

The Stewartstown Borough's Facebook page posted a month ago that a contactor in the Mayberry housing development was seen filling water tanks with water from a hydrant there. The borough said it notified State Police about the incident and called the theft of water "an ongoing issue."

The borough said it at the time it would install locking devices on several hydrants to prevent further thefts.

"We’re asking for all of your help….if you see anyone other than the fire department or the water department on a fire hydrant in Stewartstown Borough and the housing developments in Hopewell Twp that surround the borough please call 717-324-6521 at any time," the borough's post said.

The State Police investigation is ongoing.
