YORK COUNTY, Pa. — York Street in Downtown Hanover is often busy and loud, but not at two in the morning. That wasn't the case Friday.
"[It] sounded like an explosion, honestly," Hanover resident Anthony Fulginiti said. "The walls shook."
Fulginiti was in his living room next door to McAllister's on York when a driver lost control and the next-door restaurant.
The crash happened around 2 a.m., according to the restaurant's Facebook page. Nobody was injured.
Fulginiti said he checked on the driver, who stayed at the scene and was the one to call the police.
"You could tell he was in shock a little bit, which I'd imagine he would be," Fulginiti said. "Honestly, I think he was embarrassed."
These photos, shared to Facebook show the damage. Crews were cleaning up the mess through the afternoon.
The incident was an ill-timed wake-up call for many neighbors, including Brittany Rasnake, who lives across the street.
"How does that happen? How does a car go into a building?" she said. "I don't know which way, the direction it was going, but how does that happen?"
The wreck left her and others with several questions.
McAllister's on York's owner said it appeared that the truck likely turned off of Walnut Street onto York Street. Tire marks were visible on the road leading onto the sidewalk right in front of where the truck entered the restaurant.
"It's a collaborative kind of environment in town," said Forrest Webb, the owner of a nearby business. "Nobody likes to see bad things happen to other businesses because it affects everybody."
Community members posted messages of support on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
"I hope them nothing but the best," Ransake said. "I know that they will still have business."
"I’ve lived in Hanover for years now, and Hanover is like that," Fulginiti said. "Something happens, I feel like Hanover always comes together."
The restaurant will be closed Friday and Saturday for brunch and plans to be open for Saturday's dinner. Restaurant owners say they'll be open with limited seating and will contact everyone with reservations to explain how they may be affected.
At this time, it's unknown if any charges have been filed against the driver.
