YORK COUNTY, Pa. — It was the first Super Bowl for one York County pub after opening its doors in August 2023.
Staff at Horn Pub in Newberry Township, York County greeted the game day crowd with their own contest.
“We had to do something to bring more people in today, so the wing-eating contest was just a hit,” said Marcy Luckenbaugh, bartender.
While players put it all on the line, seven contestants put it all in their stomachs.
The pub expected to sell over 1,000 wings through dine-in and carry-out orders.
“We have so many wing carry-out orders today, the cooks are working all afternoon rushing to get these orders out, we had a wing special going on,” Luckenbaugh said.
Management ordered a lot more food than usual to ensure the pub wouldn’t run out and stocked up on fan-favorite beers.
“We have cases and cases of wings ready for today,” Luckenbaugh said.
For wing champion Michael Meyers, Sunday was a chance to support a local business.
“I saw this on Facebook, and I’ve been wanting to come here for a while, so it’s a good excuse to come out,” Meyers said.
Meyers visited the pub with his wife. They were two of the 160 people expected to fill seats for the game.
“It’s good for the community, it’s good for everybody, always support local businesses,” Meyers said.
Regardless of which team won the Super Bowl, Meyers guaranteed to return to Horn Pub next year, eager to congratulate the next champion.
“I will happily hand my trophy over to a new winner next year,” he said.
The pub plans to make the wing eating contest an annual event in the future.
