YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The York County SPCA dog kennel is closed for public browsing until at least Sept. 17.
According to a Facebook post by the animal shelter, two dogs that had recently entered the kennel tested positive for canine parvovirus or "parvo."
Last week, the human society police officer brought in five dogs from a hoarding case to the York County SPCA. The dogs were reportedly in deplorable conditions and needed to be removed.
When they came to the shelter, the dogs were tested for parvo and tested negative.
Over the next couple of days, some dogs became symptomatic. Two of the dogs then tested positive for parvo.
Because of the timing, the York County SPCA believes the dogs entered with parvo, which was undetectable at the time of testing. Many of the non-profit's dogs are at a low risk of catching or spreading the disease, according to the animal shelter's Facebook post.
To protect the safety of the dogs at the shelter and in the community, the York County SPCA is closing public browsing in the dog kennel for at least two weeks.
Cat and small animal browsing is available Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Those interested in meeting adoptable dogs should complete an adoption questionnaire. The York County SPCA will contact those interested to schedule a meet-up time. To make an adoption appointment, call the York County SPCA at 717-764-6109 or email info@ycsopa.org/adopt.
