YORK, Pa. — The York County SPCA will host a half-price dog adoption event later this month in an effort to address the record number of strays taken in.

The organization is currently caring for 125 dogs, with only one open large dog kennel, the YCSPCA said. Normally, the YCSPCA can care for 75 large dogs in-house. There are currently more than 30 dogs in temporary foster care, the organization said.

To address the issue, the YCSPCA will host a half-price adoption event on Saturday, January 21 at the Brougher Companion Animal Shelter at 3159 Susquehanna Trail North in York.

The adoption event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

How to Apply for Adoption

The YCSPCA recommends filling out a general application on its website and browsing its available adoptable dogs before attending an event.

"Our adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, all vaccinations, microchipping, an up-to-date medical exam, heartworm testing and preventative, flea and tick treatment, and other relevant testing," the YCSPCA said. "At the veterinarian’s office, those costs would add up to more than $400."

What to Expect at the Event

All adoptions are 50% off and will come with a free large bag of dog food. Any dog considered a “long-term kennel resident” (in YCSPCA care for over three months) will have a WAIVED adoption fee.

"If someone plans to attend, stop by the welcome/check-in table before browsing the kennel and retrieving their dog(s) from their vehicle," the YCSPCA said. "Please leave dog(s) in their vehicle until they can grab them for a meet. Attendees can walk their pets around in the grassy areas to the right of the shelter building until they are ready for a meet."

Most dogs can go home on the day of the event, the YCSPCA said. However, some may require pick-up on another day if the dog still requires vaccinations, spaying/neutering surgery, and/or necessary medical treatment.

This event is cashless. Adoption fees and other costs must be paid by credit card (for purchasing dog licenses, collars, leashes, etc.).

Pro Tips

For attendees interested in more than one dog, please have their top four to five dogs in mind, so staff and volunteers can better assist them. Attendees can browse through the kennel to see adoptable dogs, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Bring all canine and human members of the household to meet the pups. All dogs must have a collar and be on a leash. PLEASE NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES – for the dog meets, slip-lead leashes are preferred.

PLEASE BRING A COLLAR AND LEASH IF YOU PLAN ON ADOPTING A NEW DOG! The York County SPCA will have limited available for purchase.

The York County SPCA needs adopters, fosters, volunteers, and donors to step up and support our work. It takes a community to care for shelter pets, and stray dogs in York County need your help now more than ever.
