YORK, Pa. β It's a good time to be a fan of the York Revolution.
They're playoff-bound after winning the first half of the season championship, have a franchise record winning percentage in that span, and have 80 more runs scored than the next closest team in the Atlantic League.
But the Revs know that to have the community behind them, win or lose, they must mirror their community.
"I got my start in the community, in the arts," recalled the Revolution's Creative Director Cody Bannon. "I wanted to bring that little bit of downtown arts to the Revs and have that collaboration."
And the work of art the Revs had in mind is one that everyone is watching, all game long. For that, local artist Dizz Gavins gets the call.
"I was always into fashion and I was always making my own clothes and then painting came along later," said Gavins. "'Drip Gawd' didn't even come from me. Somebody gave me the name online and then everybody else kind of ran with it."
You may have seen his work, from the small to the really tall.
"I actually was designing like mock-ups for the Ravens and the Orioles and I would post them online and then Cody reached out and said, 'Hey can you do that, but for us,'" recalled Gavins.
"He's like, 'I've been waiting for this opportunity,' because he had already taken his spin on the Revs' design and not went public with it," recalled Bannon.
"I didn't even know they were watching," laughed Gavins. "They were already watching. They were already hip."
The end result is the 'dripped gawd' logo and jerseys. It's something that's in demand by both the players and fans.
"It has been hard to keep the drip Gawd designs on the shelves. We've sold out of the hats, three or four times last year. We're currently out of stock on the replica jerseys right now."
"I got the last hat. Yeah, I didn't even know they were selling out," said Gavins. "That alone makes me feel good, knowing that people see it and they see other items in there and they're like, 'Nah, I need that one.'
The real win continues to be the blending of cultures, whether you're a sports fan, someone who supports the arts, or both, the unique combination showcases something that is truly York, each time they're on the diamond.
"They might not know the backstory of why it's there, but for me, to see it and see people out in the community, we were able to make this work and kind of bring two different worlds together," claimed Bannon.
"Look good, feel good, and play good," said Gavins with a smile. "In 'Drip Gawd' it's 'G.A.W.D.' It's 'Great At What I Do.' It's an acronym. So all of us are 'Drip Gawds' at the end of the day. It's about what you put into it and what you're going to put into it later in life. A week from now, a day from now, it's just about keeping the passion, keeping the hope alive, and keeping the dream alive."
The Revs begin the second half of their season with their eye on the Atlantic League Championship. Dizz's latest designs can be seen on tour jackets for Nicki Minaj's 'Pink Friday 2 World Tour' and even a collaboration with New Balance.
So for both, the sky's the limit.
