Pennsylvania House passes resolution calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution

The For Our Freedom Amendment would allow states and Congress to set reasonable limits on campaign spending.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania House has passed a resolution calling on Congress to pass the For Our Freedom Amendment, Pennsylvania Senate Democrats announced.

House Resolution 317 (HR317) passed today in a vote of 113-88. The For Our Freedom Amendment is a proposed federal constitutional amendment giving states and Congress the right to regulate campaign spending.

According to a poll from Franklin & Marshall's College, 76.2% of Pennsylvanian voters say the influence of money in politics is a threat to democracy.

“Our elections should belong to the people, not the highest bidder. We cannot allow dark money groups to drown out the voices of Pennsylvania voters any longer. The time to act is now,” HR 317 sponsor Ben Waxman (D-Philadelphia) said.

A similar resolution has been proposed in the Pennsylvania Senate.

American Promise Pennsylvania Director Matt Powell urges the PA Senate to join their colleagues in the House and pass SR 212. If passed in the Pa. Senate, Pennsylvania will become the 23rd state to call on Congress to pass this amendment.

“This resolution marks an important step in stemming the tide of dark money flooding our campaigns from foreign interests, corporations, and out-of-state billionaires who operate with little transparency or accountability in Pennsylvania,” Powell said.

After being proposed by Congress, the For Our Freedom Amendment will need to be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures nationwide, that is 38 out of 50 states.
