'That's our guy' | President Biden visits Dauphin County as supporters back him over debate controversy

The president appeared at a campaign event in Swatara Township.

SWATARA, Pa. — President Joe Biden visited Dauphin County on Sunday amidst concerns over his candidacy in the November election from Democratic lawmakers.

The president visited an informal campaign event in Swatara Township, greeting supporters and giving brief remarks over barbecue and ice cream.

President Biden was joined by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden along with U.S. Senator John Fetterman and Lt. Governor Austin Davis along with other Democratic lawmakers.

The event came as an increasing number of House Democrats say he should step aside as the Democratic nominee following his debate with GOP nominee and former president Donald Trump.

The president did not address the concerns over his candidacy, instead focusing on what a second term would would look like.

"We're on the cusp of getting so much done," Biden said. "I really mean it. And with your help… I know we have your help. With my help, and with us working together, we're going to get a hell of a lot done for the American people."

Attendees at the event said they remain steadfast behind Biden as the Democratic nominee.

"He's the only man right now who can really serve the American people in a very dangerous time, because he has served for his whole life," said Marla Garza-Friel, a volunteer for the Lancaster County Democrats.

"I am here to support my president and his wife," said Lorna Dievert, a Democrat volunteer from York County. "He has done so much for the middle class so far, and all of the environmental impacts that he's doing are also incredibly important."

Other Democratic officials in attendance say that Biden's age and performance in the debate will not sway their support.

"There is no threshold," said State Rep. Justin Fleming (D-Dauphin) when asked if his support for Biden could change. "I'm a pledged delegate for Joe Biden. I cannot wait to go to Chicago and nominate him later this summer as our Democratic nominee. I think the job he has done has been extraordinary in terms of getting policies passed. That's what the American people want."

The president also visited a Harrisburg coffee shop with Governor Josh Shapiro following the event.
