HARRISBURG, Pa. — Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels is part of a crowded field in the Democratic primary vying for the right to challenge incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District.
Daniels is one of six Democrats running in the primary, joining John Broadhurst, Rick Coplen, Blake Lynch, Mike O'Brien, and Janelle Stelson, according to Ballotpedia.
It's Daniels' second attempt to unseat Perry in the 10th. In 2022, Perry defeated Daniels to capture a sixth term in the U.S. House, garnering 53.8% of the vote to Daniels' 46.2%. It was Perry's largest margin of victory since the 10th District, which covers all of Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties, was formed in 2018.
Daniels immigrated with her family to the United States from Venezuela when she was 13 years old. Her 2022 campaign for the U.S. House centered around investing in infrastructure, advancing the rights of women and families and "fixing our broken immigration system."
Elected to Harrisburg City Council in 2013, Daniels said she is running for Congress "because the opportunity to build a good life through hard work isn’t available to too many of us, and it should be. Because the sacred right to vote is under attack by people who know they’d never win another election if all of our voices were heard. Because our democracy has enemies, and they need to be stopped."
Daniels lists jobs and the economy, improving infrastructure, education, supporting Pennsylvania's agriculture community, healthcare, Social Security and Medicare, the environment, and supporting veterans as her primary legislative issues.
