PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Votes are in for the next auditor general of Pennsylvania.

Incumbent Republican Timothy DeFoor defeated State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-181) and three other candidates to win the office.

He was first sworn in as Pennsylvania's 50th Auditor General on Jan. 19, 2021.

DeFoor has previously worked as a special investigator and special agent with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He later became a fraud investigator and internal auditor for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In 2015, he was elected as Dauphin County Controller and worked to create Dauphin County's first Audit Division, according to the auditor general's website.

DeFoor grew up in Harrisburg and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Paralegal Studies from Harrisburg Area Community College. He continued to earn his Bachelor's degree in Sociology/History from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master's of Science in project management from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

The auditor general is described as the state's chief fiscal watchdog. When the state collects taxes and decides to spend on a new building or program, it's the auditor general's job to make sure tax dollars are ending up where they're intended to be.

The auditor general is required to review much of the state's spending and report back to lawmakers and the public on whether it was spent properly.
