LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Republican Lloyd Smucker is returning to Congress after defeating Democratic challenger Jim Atkinson in the race for the U.S. 11th District, which covers all of Lancaster County and southern and eastern portions of York County outside of the city of York.
Smucker, 60, a Lancaster County native, has served in his current office since 2019. Prior to his election in the 11th, he served as U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania’s 16th Congressional District. He is also a former Pennsylvania state senator.
In Congress, Smucker served on the Committee on Education and the Workforce and on the Committee on Ways and Means.
Smucker endorsed Donald Trump in this year’s election. Trump, in turn, announced his endorsement of Smucker’s re-election.
Smucker says he is opposed to abortion and has also stated opposition to codifying women’s right to birth control.
He has said he opposes an income tax increase and unchecked federal spending. He has supported lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth.
A graduate of both Franklin & Marshall and Lebanon Valley colleges, Smucker has also served on the West Lampeter Township Board of Supervisors from 2001-2005.
Smucker defeated Brad Hollister in the 2022 election and Sarah Hammond in 2020. In 2018, he defeated challenger Jess King.
