YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Three York County students were announced winners on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a contest designed to increase voter turnout.
The three winners were from different schools where students were judged from grades K through 3rd, 6th through 8th and high schoolers.
The York County Commissioners and the county cultural alliance introduced the design contest for students to create "I Voted" stickers.
14-year-old Estella Dugger of York Academy was selected as the winner for grades 6th through 8th after honoring U.S. History.
“I wanted to symbolize equality in it, like the people holding hands and then things like freedom and “In God We Trust” which is the inscription on the penny,” said Estella Dugger.
The idea behind this contest comes after President Commissioner of York County Julie Wheeler researched ways to increase voter turnout. She found a county in South Carolina that had a similar idea of encouraging more young people to vote.
More than 200 students in the area showed off their artistic designs.
“These are wonderful representations of York County where you have some of our agricultural routes displayed in Madeline’s so it’s a really good cross-section of what our youngsters think about York County and the voting process,” said Julie Wheeler.
The three “I Voted” stickers will be handed out over the next two weeks while people drop off their mail-in ballots and on election day at all 161 polling centers in York County.
