WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Former President Trump and President Biden are preparing a rematch in the 2024 presidential election this fall, and one of Biden’s first campaign ads makes a direct claim about his opponent’s stance on the issue of abortion.
"Now, in 2024 he’s running to pass a national ban on a woman’s right to choose," Biden said in the ad.
So, let’s Verify.
The campaign ad references a Rolling Stone article from February.
That article references an article from the New York Times claiming Mr. Trump privately supported a 16-week nationwide ban on abortion with exceptions for rape, incest and saving the life of the mother.
In the past, Trump has taken credit for the U.S. Supreme Court overturning of Roe V. Wade in 2022, saying the three conservative justices he appointed made the difference in that decision and in the Dobbs V. Jackson ruling that left abortion policy up to the states.
It’s also referenced in the ad.
"For 54 years they were trying to get Roe V. Wade terminated. I did it and I’m proud to have done it," Trump said in the clip.
As for his support of a nationwide abortion ban, the former president had this to say in a video posted to his Truth Social page this week.
"My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislature or perhaps both. Whatever they decide must be the law of the land, in this case, the law of the state," Trump said.
In that video, Mr. Trump reiterated his support for exceptions to any law but did not directly address if he’d sign a nationwide ban or how long after conception he thinks the ban should be in place.
But, last month the former president made this statement on a radio show.
"The number of weeks now, people are agreeing on 15 and I’m thinking in terms of that. It’ll come out to something that’s very reasonable," Trump said.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Associated Press reported the former president was asked if he would support a nationwide ban on abortion if it passed Congress. Mr. Trump shook his head and said "No."
The encounter was reportedly captured on video.
This would make the Biden campaign's claim false.
