Central Pennsylvania DNC Delegates back Harris, react to Biden dropping out

President Biden and Governor Josh Shapiro have endorsed Kamala Harris for the Democratic Nomination.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — President Joe Biden has ended his reelection bid, and Pennsylvania's delegates to the Democratic National Convention now have a decision to make.

The national delegates will now have to choose a new nominee in a virtual roll call before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which begins on Aug. 19.

State Representative and DNC delegate Justin Fleming (D-Dauphin) says he is backing Vice President Kamala Harris.

"She's been an excellent part of this administration for the last three and a half years, and all the progress that has been made with infrastructure, with expanding health care, with lowering the cost of insulin, for example," Fleming said. "I hope Vice President Harris is the nominee."

Fleming will be one of the 187 Pennsylvania delegates voting on the nominee. He says Democrats would be wise to learn from what happened in 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson dropped out of the race, causing chaos within the party.

"We have had enough uncertainty," Fleming said. "There has been enough chaos. I do think it's important for Democrats to coalesce around the Vice President and really get a hold of this thing and focus on winning in November and beating Donald Trump."

Other statewide leaders, such as Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bob Casey, have also endorsed Harris as the nominee.

The Democratic National Convention takes place from Aug. 19 - 22 in Chicago, which also hosted the convention in 1968, the last time a sitting president did not seek reelection.
