The latest on Kamala Harris's search for a running mate

Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania is seen as one of the front runners to join the Democratic presidential ticket.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Vice President Kamala Harris is closing in on choosing a running mate.

She's set to make her first appearance with her vice presidential pick in less than 48 hours.

The Democratic ticket will kick off a "Battleground State Tour" Tuesday at Temple University's Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

As of Monday morning, it's not clear if a final decision has been made after a weekend of interviews with possible contenders.

One of the names at the top of Harris's shortlist is Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg are all in the mix.

Shapiro is seen by many pundits as a favorite, as they believe he could help the vice president lock up the key swing state of Pennsylvania, as well as appeal to more moderate voters.

Shapiro is also facing criticism by some on the left.

President John E. Jones III of Dickinson College, a former federal judge, has known Shapiro for decades, and says the choice would make a lot of sense for Harris.

“He is a formidable politician, he always had ‘it’ and he always had a quiet intensity about him," explained Jones. "I’m not surprised he’s in the Governor’s chair, and I’m not surprised he’s being considered for this. I think he would check a lot of boxes."

Shapiro has publicly dodged questions about potentially joining the Democratic ticket, continuously stating Vice President Harris will make the choice that is best for her.

He has heavily campaigned for her in several parts of Pennsylvania since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month.

Democratic delegates began casting virtual ballots for the nomination on Thursday, and by Friday, Kamala Harris had secured enough votes to win the party's nomination.

That voting process ends Monday.

Whether the VP pick is announced Monday or Tuesday closer to the Philadelphia rally is yet to be seen.

After the stop in Philadelphia, Harris and her vice president will head to several other battleground states for campaign events, including Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada.
