Could Josh Shapiro become VP nominee under Kamala Harris?

The Pennsylvania governor is seen as one of the frontrunners if Vice President Harris were to win the nomination.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Vice President Kamala Harris is currently the frontrunner to become the Democratic nominee for president following President Biden's decision to drop out of the race.

If Harris wins the nomination, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is seen as one of the frontrunners to become her vice presidential nominee.

Philadelphia Democratic Chair Bob Brady became one of the first party leaders to endorse Shapiro for the VP nomination on Sunday following Biden's announcement on social media.

"Our Governor, Josh Shapiro, would be an excellent choice," Brady wrote. "His addition to the Democratic ticket would significantly boost our chances in Pennsylvania and in communities like ours across the country."

State Representative and Democratic National Committee delegate Justin Fleming (D-Dauphin) says that Shaprio is currently focused on his job as governor and highlighting the recent bipartisan budget he signed.

"He obviously is serving right now as governor of Pennsylvania," Fleming said. "They are embarking on an ambitious agenda to sell the budget that was just passed and make the public aware of all the great things that were in that budget. And so I think if you would ask him, he already has a he has a position, he has a job."

Shapiro expressed similar remarks last Thursday at an event at the Governor's Residency when asked about joining the ticket if Biden were to step aside.

“I love serving as governor, and I've made clear where I stand on the presidential race," Shapiro said at the time. "It's the President's decision to make. He's made it, and I think today is the day to celebrate what we accomplished here in Pennsylvania. We're showing the nation that here in Pennsylvania, we know how to get stuff done for everybody, and that's what we're doing.“

The last vice presidential nominee from Pennsylvania and the only vice president ever from Pennsylvania was George Dallas, who served under President James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849.
