Beating the heat at Camp Mocanaquah

For 35 years, Girl Scouts have battled the weather at camp but have still managed to have fun.

BACK MOUNTAIN, Pa. — Girl Scouts taking refuge in the shade are belting out Taylor Swift's 'Cruel Summer.' A fitting tune, as temperatures reach the 90s at Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County. It's making making some campers a little uncomfortable.

"It's just hot, really, really hot," explained Emily, a camper from Shavertown.

"Definitely a heat wave this week for sure," said camp co-director Andrea Carr.

Camp Mocanaquah has been going on here at the state park near Wyoming for 35 years. Organizers say the weather and making sure the campers stay safe in it is always on their minds.

"Definitely one of our hottest that I can remember," said co-director Kelly Cook. "Weather here is sometimes freezing cold, and we're all in sweatshirts, especially when we get here, but it definitely is one of our hottest, so like she said, we just make sure that we keep drinking, drinking water, water, water, h2o."

Almost every camper came prepared with their own water bottle and each took turns filling up.

"Make sure to stay hydrated," camper Ava Kamback of Shavertown reminded us.

Moving activities into the shade and under pavilions was another way these day campers worked to stay cool.

"We're just trying to stay out of the sun. I'm trying not to run," said third-grade camper Peggy.

Some fun and games though are still taking place in sun and counselors are making sure campers take breaks in between activities.

"Yes, it's a lot of fun. It's definitely worth it," said counselor Rileigh Santee.

Some campers, however, decided that while picking through bones in these owl pellets, they have a bone or two to pick with Mother Nature this week.

"I wish it was like windy a little bit like sometimes it could be like windy and be like okay, just not hot every single second one here," groaned Emily.
