Family Promise working on expansion

The nonprofit, which helps families dealing with homelessness, has been at max capacity for more than a year.

NESQUEHONING, Pa. — It's been a full house at Family Promise of Carbon County in Nesquehoning.

The Transitional Living Program has 25 people under its roof right now, including 14 children. Director Cathy Lamm says as soon as one family leaves, another comes in.  The waiting list is currently 86 families long.

"The need is affordable housing; salaries don't match with the rents that are out there and people find themselves homeless for many reasons." said Lamm

Staff say the steady increase of families needing help means they've outgrown their current space.

Last winter Newswatch 16 got a look inside the warming center at the church right next door to the transitional living center. The building is now undergoing renovations to make space for case workers and eventually, house even more families.

"We are at capacity here so our overflow can certainly utilize the church building and it will help us be able to serve more people." said Lamm.

Before more renovations can happen in this new space, the rooms inside here need to be cleaned out. Family promise has a fundraiser this weekend that will help them do just that.

This weekend, the non-profit will host a "Rummage Sale with a Twist".

"You just fill your box or bag we have clothing toys, electronics housewares kitchen items you name it." said Lamm

Family Promise is asking for a five-dollar donation. That fundraiser runs Saturday from 9am -1 pm on West Mill Street in Nesquehoning.
