Field day for students with disabilities

Students took part in the 17th annual field day at the Wilkes-Barre Area High School field on Thursday.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — More than 1,000 students from Luzerne and Wyoming counties attended the 17th annual field day event at Wilkes-Barre Area High School. Hosted by Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18.

The field day is similar to the Special Olympics. It allows students to gather with friends and other community members.

"The idea of field day is that every student is a winner. Every student can be celebrated. Their family and friends are here to celebrate them, and it's just a great day," said Anthony Grieco, Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 Executive Director.

Smiles were seen all around as students enjoyed the activities and competitions. There was even a new activity for students to have fun with.

"This year we had the addition of the variety charities with the support of the ALLOne Foundation where sixteen students received adaptive bikes so now they can go out into the community and participate with their peers," added Grieco.

The event focuses on highlighting inclusivity. It's a day students and volunteers look forward to.

"So all year long, they're excited for it. They're just thrilled to come here. We're putting together activities. We're working on it. They look forward to it all year long," said Megan Henry, Special Education Supervisor.

Volunteers organized a day full of fun. The field day had softball tossing tournaments for the students. Relay races on the field and food for everyone to enjoy.

"Everybody will leave happy. Everybody will leave with some prizes and some ribbons and hopefully with smiles on their faces," said Grieco.
