Radio personalities walking 30 miles in three days through six counties to end hunger

Lura and Shelly are on a walk to raise money for a nearby food bank.

DANVILLE, Pa. — If you've been driving through Central Pennsylvania the past day or two, you may have noticed three women pushing empty shopping carts. Lura Good and Shelly Woods are radio personalities at Hanna Radio and Big Foot Country, based in the Selinsgrove Area. This week, they are walking from Selinsgrove to Williamsport to raise money for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

"The one thing i'm so excited for is this beautiful weather we also have Kir from the food bank joining us for the very first time this year, so it started off as just me, my shopping cart, and a lone state trooper following me down Route 11 and now it's grown to having three of us," said Lura Good, on-air radio personality Hanna Radio.

This is the fourth annual Lura's Walk for Hunger. Good, Woods, and Kir Evancho from the Central PA Food Bank will push empty shopping carts for 30 miles over three days through six counties to raise awareness of food insecurity during the holiday season.

"Some people say, hey what are you pushing the shopping car for and you just run over and start talking to them about the miles for military share and how much it's needed, yesterday in milton there was a guy sitting on his porch and he said I don't know how much is in my pocket but i'm just gonna give it all to you, and so he just give me a wad of cash and i didn't count it, just gave it right to the food bank," said Shelly Woods, on-air radio personality, Big Foot Country.

So far, they've raised $14,000, with a goal of $25,000 by the end of their journey.

"It's gonna make a wonderful wonderful impact for our military share distributions to be able to provide literally thousands and thousands and thousands of fresh nutritious meals," said Kir Evancho, Central PA Food Bank.

Evancho says nine percent of families that visit the food bank have a family member who is either a veteran or an active service military member.

"We don't want any of our heroes particularly those who are serving their country to go hungry throughout not only the upcoming holiday season but year round," said Good.
