Free food and a safe space for those in need

The New Love Center Café does more than just provide free meals.

JERSEY SHORE, Pa. — Volunteers spent their Presidents Day cooking at the Trinity United Methodist Church.

The church in Jersey Shore is the home of the New Love Center Cafe, a spot for people in need to get a free, hot meal.

"We serve 5 days a week, and anywhere from 30 to 70 people a day; you never know how many, and it depends what meal we're serving; it's completely free; anyone can come in," said Chris Fink, cook at New Love Center Cafe.

The cafe, which used to be in downtown Jersey Shore, moved to the church eight years ago.

Volunteers order food through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, and local businesses help too.

"We get donations; every morning, we go to Weis, and they donate from their bakery and bake goods which we serve, and we also put out for people to take," explained Chris.

Volunteers say they noticed an increased need as the cost of food rises, "We have a monthly report, it's over 1,000 meals we serve a month if you figure anywhere from 30 to 70 a day, 5 days a week, some days are lower than others," said Chris.

The cafe also provides a safe space for adults with special needs.

Alice Plummer is a direct support professional at Clinton County Community Connections.

The agency brings clients to the cafe for a free meal and to help with their social skills.

"They're not able to pack a proper lunch, so when we started to bring them here, they're now able to get a nice meal, and sometimes it might be their only nice meal for the day, and it has helped a lot," said Alice.

The New Love Center Cafe is always looking for extra help. Donations can be dropped off at Trinity United Methodist Church.
