SCRANTON, Pa. — Governor Josh Shapiro made a brief stop in Scranton Thursday morning to visit wounded city Detective Kyle Gilmartin.
Gov. Shapiro spent about 20 minutes with the injured officer at Geisinger Community Medical Center.
The governor's visit came ahead of a planned stop in Luzerne County, where he spoke about the detective.
"He is someone who has got a hell of a spirit, you can tell. We were holding hands while we were talking. He smiled and clenched my hand, and you could tell things were going well," said the governor.
Shapiro also thanked the hospital staff taking care of Gilmartin.
Det. Gilmartin was shot in the line of duty last week in Scranton. He remains in critical condition.
On Wednesday, police charged Aiden Deininger, 20, while still in the hospital, with attempted homicide, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, weapons charges, and reckless endangerment.
Deininger was critically injured in the gunfight with police last week that left Det. Gilmartin badly wounded.
