Inaugural cornhole tournament to honor late Pennsylvania student-athlete

The inaugural memorial honors Josh Balara, a recognized student-athlete from Dallas High School and Dartmouth College who passed after a battle with adrenal cancer.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A cornhole tournament in Luzerne County honored a late student-athlete on Saturday.

The inaugural cornhole tournament held at the Checkboard Inn in Trucksville honored Josh Balara, a recognized student-athlete from Dallas High School and Dartmouth College who passed away after a battle with adrenal cancer in 2023.

Since Balara's passing, his parents started a scholarship foundation in his honor for a Dallas High School football player.

Greg Balara, Josh's father, spoke about the importance of the scholarship, "He loved Dallas, Dallas football, Coach Mannello, all those guys. So, to be able to give the scholarship to someone from the Dallas High School football team, I think that's something that Josh really, really would have gotten behind. So we're really happy about that."

They have awarded one $5,000 scholarship so far in Luzerne County.
