Kindness Week at Pennsylvania university expands from campus

Some Marywood University students are on a mission to spread kindness with a week's worth of activities.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Brightly colored Post-it Notes hang in the window at the Learning Commons on Marywood University's campus. The notes bear messages of kindness, part of Kindness Week, put together for the second year in a row by twin sisters Liz and Maddie Adams.

"It's really that easy, and sometimes we just need that reminder to show kindness and appreciation, love to the people around us," said junior Maddie Adams.

The duo started this mission of spreading kindness because of the challenges Liz has faced over the years. The sisters say the event went so well last year that they were encouraged to create events for Kindness Week again, starting with the notes.

"I think that's really nice," said junior Brianna Kohut. "Hundreds of people walk by here every day and maybe those kind words will make their day."

Broadway in Scranton caught wind of Marywood's Kindness Week and wanted to team up and spread the word ahead of this weekend's show "Come from Away" at the Scranton Cultural center.

"'Come from Away' is a true story all about kindness and generosity and we wanted to spread that throughout Scranton this week," said Ali Basalyga from Broadway in Scranton.

The organization got ten area businesses to join in the activities, including Dutchie's in Scranton. Co-owner Carrie Mayer says it was a no-brainer.

"I feel like what the world needs is more kindness. Kindness is free, something we can do for everyone, and it's really important."

The Post-it Notes are one of several different activities for Kindness Week.

"We have thank-you cards that kids can take. And we also have what we are calling the kind seat. We're going to ask students, whoever, to come sit next to a friend, a stranger, and to share a kind word to each other," Liz Adams said.

You don't even have to be on campus or visit one of these businesses to take a minute and show some kindness to others.
