BALTIMORE — The progress of cleaning up the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore continues, but a massive step was taken toward reopening the Port of Baltimore this week.
The bridge collapsed in March after a cargo ship, named the Dali, crashed into it. The bridge collapse temporarily closed the Port of Baltimore.
According to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers - Baltimore District, salvage crews successfully removed the finally large steel truss between Monday and Tuesday. The steel truss was blocking the full 700' wide channel.
USACE Baltimore said the two-day removal project required concrete breakers, underwater surveys, & oxyacetylene torches to separate tons of the bridge's concrete roadway, cable, and steel rebar.
The effort toward a full-width restoration of the Port of Baltimore is projected to be June 8-10 as workers continue to remove the leftover wreckage.
