Removal of largest span of collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore postponed for lightning

It will not occur on Sunday, May 12 as planned due to weather conditions.

BALTIMORE — The planned demolition of the largest remaining span of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has been postponed for weather concerns, according to the United States Coast Guard. It will no longer occur on Sunday.

Due to weather conditions producing lighting and high tides, the controlled demolition has tentatively been moved to Monday.

Crews have been preparing for weeks to use explosives to break down the large steel span. Once broken up, salvage crews will use cranes and barges to remove those sections of the bridge from the channel. The goal is to eventually refloat the Dali, as well.

The current 2,000-yard safety zone around the Francis Scott Key Bridge remains in effect and is intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment. No vessel or person will be permitted to enter the safety zone without obtaining permission from the COTP or a designated representative.

The Temporary Flight Restriction extends for two nautical miles in radius from the center of the bridge and from the surface up to and including 1,500 feet above ground level.

There is a zero-tolerance policy regarding any drone use anywhere within the “No Drone Zone” established by the FAA. Anyone who attempts to fly a drone in any prohibited manner may be subject to arrest, prosecution, fines, and/or imprisonment.
