No, the Commanders are not finalizing a contract with a new head of football operations | VERIFY

Tweets with thousands of interactions said the team was hiring SF's Adam Peters, but the team says that is not true.

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders are reportedly considering many candidates for two of the most important roles in the franchise: head coach and head of football operations. Both positions are open after the team parted ways with Ron Rivera following the final game of the 2023 regular season.

Intrigue has swirled among fans about who the new ownership group, led by Josh Harris, might pick.

Several other teams are seeking to fill head coach and front office jobs, creating a demand for chances to meet with the leading candidates.

QUESTION

Are the Washington Commanders finalizing a deal with Adam Peters to be the next head of football operations?

SOURCE

ANSWER

This is false.

Peters is a popular name on lists of potential candidates, but he is not in the final stages of a contract agreement with Washington.

WHAT WE FOUND

As one of the top members of the front office in San Francisco, Peters has overseen a run that has led the 49ers to the top of the NFC. Before that, he led the scouting department for the Denver Broncos and helped them win Super Bowl 50.

An account on X, formerly known as Twitter, called WFT Hub, wrote Tuesday that the team was very close to an agreement to hire Peters away from San Francisco. Two posts about the impending hire got more than 2,000 likes and retweets.

When asked whether the hiring was imminent, a spokesperson for the Commanders denied the report to WUSA9.

After the team announced Rivera's departure Monday, a story first reported by WUSA9, Harris said he planned a thorough but rapid hiring process. He brought on former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman to advise the search committee, which is made up of Harris and some of the team's other owners.
