YORK, Pa. — Stop the Violence Ministry in Dauphin County was founded by Mim Roberts Harvey decades ago.
After going through her own domestic violence situation, she knew had to do something to help others.
"I started this out of my home," she explained. "Giving people in that situation clothes to wear from my kids or from myself and food from my freezer."
Service, Mim says, has always been a passion of hers.
"I know what it's like to be without heat, without anything. So coming from this, I know exactly where they were coming from," she admitted.
The need was there, and it quickly grew. Today, more than 100 families a month can come to Stop the Violence Ministry to get food, clothing, and toys....you can even grab a bike, all for free.
"Sharing is caring and we may not have a lot of money but we have a lot of love to share with somebody," she said.
That caring attitude got Mim nominated by more than one person, including her daughter, Mia, for a Jefferson Award.
"She deserves it to me, not just because she's mom, she cares for everyone, she looks at the heart," Mia told FOX43. "She has a heart of gold and she would do anything for anyone."
Mim says more than anything, she wants Stop the Violence Ministry to be known as a safe haven for abused women.
I always say the red door is a safe haven- look for the red door, you will be safe here," she said.
The organization is always in need of funds to keep the ministry going. If you'd like to help, click here.
