PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson will stay in the dugout for at least two more seasons after the team extended his contract.
Thomson's entire coaching staff is staying put next season as well, the team announced Tuesday.
The extension was announced by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski during a season-ending press conference.
The Phillies have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons since Thomson took over for Joe Girardi early in the 2022 season. Under his guidance that year, the team surged into the National League Playoffs as a wildcard, defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres on their way to the NL pennant before bowing out in the World Series against the Houston Astros.
The Phils have made the playoffs twice since then, but have made disappointing early exits in each trip. They fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 NLCS, squandering a 2-0 series lead, and bowed out to the surging New York Mets in this year's NLDS after capturing their first NL East title since 2011 in the regular season.
Thomson, 61, has a 250-185 career record as a manager, a .575 winning percentage.
Before coming to Philadelphia as a bench coach under Gabe Kapler in 2018, Thomson served as bench coach for the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017.
Thomson spent his entire playing career in the Detroit Tigers organization, where he was a career minor-leaguer. He played third base and catcher.
Following his playing career, Thomson began his coaching career in the Tigers' minor-league system.
