YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Red Lion High School's baseball team is experiencing one of its best seasons to date.
Even though the Lions are one of the top teams in the York Adams league, they won't be able to capture a YAIAA title this year due to the uncontrollable nature of this spring's sports season.
The YAIAA announced this year's playoffs have been canceled and they will allow teams to just focus on the district tournament instead of trying to make up all the games.
"It's been a lot of going, and then stopping. You get in the rhythm, then it hits the brakes again," said Red Lion Junior Shortstop Connor Lawrence. "I feel like our team has definitely done a good job through it."
However, all hope is not lost as the team shifts its focus to an even bigger prize: the PIAA District III playoffs.
"We have some really great kids and we are in the middle of a pretty historic season," said Head Coach Kevin Lawrence. "Not everything is going to go how you like. We just have to put ourselves in a position to be competitive in the District and, hopefully, the state tournament."
Red Lion has one final game left on their schedule against the other top team in the YAIAA, South Western High School.
District play will follow, which will begin a whole new season.
"Even if we haven't played for a week or three days, we are still going to get better and work towards the next game," said Connor Lawrence. "Once you get into districts in baseball, seeds and records don’t matter."
The Lions plan to use the extra time to rest but also have a scrimmage set up to stay in the swing of things.
The district playoffs are set to begin on May 17.
