'This is a very special moment:' Harrisburg High dedicates basketball court to all-time winning coach | Spotlight

Kirk Smallwood coached the Cougars for nearly four decades, winning two PIAA State Titles.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Thursday night, The Harrisburg School District held a court dedication ceremony to honor former athletic director and boys basketball head coach Kirk Smallwood.

Smallwood was an integral part in the Cougars’ success for years. He spent nearly four decades coaching and is the winningest coach in Harrisburg High School history.

“I had chills. I've worked all my life to bring a successful nationally recognized program here to Harrisburg High School. It worked out, had great assistance and I just feel honored to be a part of this,” said Smallwood

This place means more to Smallwood than words can describe. As Harrisburg kicks off a new season, it's fitting they dedicate the court to a coach that put his heart and soul into this program.

Surrounded by family, friends and former student-athletes that played for Smallwood, the dedication ceremony was held during halftime of the boys game against Hazelton Area.

Members from local and state governments were also there to honor Smallwood. Even, naming December 7, 2023, “Kirk Smallwood Day.”

His record is unmatched coaching the Cougars. He lead teams to two PIAA State Titles and nine District III Championships. It will be long time until someone catches the All-Time winningest coach in school history, with 678 wins.

"I had great student athletes who worked hard and believed and I had the community that gave me a chance. I'm just honored that they chose me and felt that I was worthy,” he told FOX43.

His accomplishments will forever be engraved on the hardwood.
