HARRISBURG, Pa. — A handful of fishers competed in a Capital City BassMasters organized tournament on Wednesday evening despite the heat. They say to be successful in the high temperatures fishers need extra awareness of what’s happening in and out of the water.
When it comes to snagging a bite in the heat, Capital City BassMasters Tournament Director Harvey Smiley says success often comes down to where you are fishing. During hot days, fishing in moving waters like the Susquehanna River is the place to be.
"Especially in moving water like the river, it doesn't heat up as quick," said Smiley. "At Pinchot State Park, I've seen temperatures get to almost 90 degrees. It's really hard to catch fish when it's hot water because they don't want to eat any more than we want to go out and do anything outside when it's hot."
Anglers add that factors outside the water are just as important. Staying protected from the sun and staying hydrated can make or break a good and safe fishing day.
"You're out there and you're thinking, 'What do I need to throw? Are they biting on this?' Or you get excited because you caught a couple, and you forget to drink. Next thing you know, you're drier than the desert. It's protection from the sun and hydration are the two big keys to staying safe on the water."
