DeSean Jackson announces he's retiring as an Eagle

The veteran wideout and Philly legend will be an honorary captain for the Eagles this Sunday following his retirement.

One of the most dynamic and beloved receivers to don the midnight green has decided it is time to hang the cleats.

After 15 years in the NFL, eight with the Philadelphia Eagles, DeSean Jackson has announced his retirement. He also announced he will officially retire as an Eagle.

From his rookie year in 2008 until the end of his prime around 2016, Jackson has unquestionably been the most electrifying skill player this side of Miami's Tyreek Hill.

Though he played for a total of six different teams, Jackson was never a stranger to the city of brotherly love. He never seemed to ever leave fans' hearts and memories since he was traded from the team in 2014.

In his first six-year stint in Philly, Jackson accumulated single season bests in yardage (1,332), touchdowns (9) and receptions (82), all the while becoming a face etched upon the modern Eagles version of Mount Rushmore due to his show-stopping speed, agility and on-field swagger.

Arguably his best highlight, Jackson's playmaking was taken to new heights as he orchestrated the famous "miracle at the New Meadowlands" punt return in the final seconds of an incredible comeback by the Birds in a game against the Giants. His vision of the field, acceleration and ability to cut on a dime were all on display when he called game on that cold December afternoon.

Following his departure in 2014 when then coach Chip Kelly released him, Jackson joined Washington for three years, then Tampa Bay for two as his career seemed to be winding down.

Birds fans were ecstatic to learn, however, that the team was acquiring the now aging, yet still talented, X-receiver in a 2019 homecoming.

The stint was injury-laden and Jackson missed more games than he actually played, but he played enough to grab two deep ball touchdowns from Carson Wentz and another from Jalen Hurts.

For perspective on his place in Eagles history, Jackson is the only player to catch touchdowns from the combination of Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts. From the past to the future of the franchise, Jackson made his presence felt in Philly.

The Eagles announced that they will celebrate his retirement this Sunday as he enters the field as an honorary captain prior to the game against the San Francisco 49ers.
