Transfer portal provides local talent with chance to return home

The NCAA transfer portal has played a key role in allowing local stars to return home and for teams to build their rosters.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — The NCAA transfer portal has blown up since it was first introduced to college athletics.

The tool has been crucial in helping build out rosters and provide better opportunities in all aspects of college sports; one of the benefits has also been the chance to return home for Pennsylvanian talent ready to return to their roots.

Former Warwick star and Penn State transfer Nolan Rucci, who is following in his former Nittany Lions parents' footsteps, is benefitting from the portal.

"My parents have appreciated having a two-hour drive versus a 14," said Rucci "Just the fact that they can get out here and I get [to go] home on the weekends has been awesome."

The portal has also been big for Division II and III athletics. Millersville head football coach J.C. Morgan uses it to supplement his roster with extra talent and competition.

"Many programs are losing guys to the portal but it's also an opportunity to replace guys. There are a lot of guys out there," explained Morgan. "At the end of the day, it's about being true to your values and getting young men who are true to that as well."

According to the NCAA's first-year transfer data, more than 20,000 student-athletes have entered the portal. Keeping those relationships with previous coaches is a big aspect for many looking for their next place.

"Just being cordial with every coach, even if you don’t commit to their school, just making sure they know they are still appreciated," said Rucci. "You have built those relationships for years and they can still be there when you are in the portal."
