USGA leader expects to be back in Lancaster again someday

The organization and Lancaster Country Club are having conversations about hosting future events

LANCASTER, Pa. — By the time this week's U.S. Women's Open concludes, Lancaster Country Club will be first and second on the all-time list when it comes to attendance figures for the event.

The consistent and impressive community support makes this area a high priority for the United States Golf Association when it comes to scheduling events.

FOX43 asked USGA CEO Mike Whan where the club falls into other USGA possibilities with this particular course and this community.

"If you’re asking if the USGA is interested in a long-term relationship with Lancaster, we are," Whan replied.  "We’re having those conversations now with the club, nothing to announce yet but if you were betting on future USGA events here, that would probably be a safe bet.”

The U.S. Women's Open had very humble beginnings 79 years ago.  It began with only 39 entrants and the winner was given war bonds. This year, over 1,900 entrants attempted to qualify for the event from 39 different countries.

The purse is the highest in their history at $12 million and Lancaster Country Club is now one of their preferred venues.
