STEELTON, Pa. — The Erby family has had quite a high school career. After four straight district titles and three straight state championships with Steelton-Highspire High School, their time together on the field ended at the annual Big 33 game between Team Maryland and Team Pennsylvania.
Andrew Erby served as one of the assistant coaches while his sons, Alex and Andrew Jr., were players on the team, all taking the field one final time as a family.
"To go out here and play with my brother and some of my teammates and my dad on the same field... it feels like home," said Alex Erby. "To go out there and do it one last time with the guys I love is truly special."
Their final game ended with one last win on the scoreboard as Team PA dominated Maryland, but maybe the biggest win came as a family, one final time.
"At the end of the day, I got a call a day before the game," said Andrew Erby Jr. "I knew I had one more chance to play with my brother and dad coaching and I decided to step up and play."
Andrew Erby Sr. may have served as one of the assistant coaches on the staff, but his presence was still felt. A final time to work directly with his sons was all he could ask for.
"I said we didn’t have a lot of time to get ready but to play to the best of your ability," said Erby Senior. "They had fun and you couldn’t ask for a better way to go out with your two boys winning the Big 33. It was a great experience and great week."
Alex Erby will be heading to the Naval Academy to play while Andrew Erby Jr. will be heading to Ohio University next fall.
