NEW OXFORD, Pa. — This week's FOX43 High School Football Frenzy Game of the Week features a showdown between two early season unbeatens in the York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Friday night, South Western puts its unblemished record on the line with a visit to fellow undefeated New Oxford. The game will kick off at 7 p.m., at New Oxford, but the FOX43 High School Football Frenzy crew will be there to preview all the action beginning at 6.
Here's a look at the game.
ABOUT SOUTH WESTERN: The Mustangs are looking to kick up a fuss in the YAIAA Division 1 title race, which appears to be wide open based on early season results. Perennial title contenders Central York and William Penn have both stumbled out the gate in the early going; the Panthers fell to 1-1 with a 28-14 loss to Manheim Township last week, while York High is still seeking its first win after being outscored 67-12 in losses to CD East and Hempfield.
Meanwhile, South Western and Dallastown, who were part of a three-way logjam for second place in division play last year, are the only two unbeaten YAIAA Division 1 teams so far. The Mustangs hammered York Suburban 36-6 in their season opener and knocked off Dover 42-13 last week. Dallastown is 2-0 after knocking off L-L League teams Hempfield (28-9) and Penn Manor (28-0) in consecutive weeks.
This week's matchup is South Western's final tuneup before the Mustangs open Division 1 play at home against Dallastown on Sept. 13.
The Mustang offense has been rolling in the early going, averaging just under 350 total yards per game through two weeks. Senior RB Austin Rollman has been the main catalyst, racking up 198 yards and five touchdowns in his first two outings. He's coming off a 120-yard, three-TD performance in last week's rout of Dover. QB Bryce Graham has completed 18 of 24 passes for 385 yards and two TDs for the Mustangs. He's a returning starter under center.
South Western is looking to avenge a 41-27 loss to New Oxford last season.
ABOUT NEW OXFORD: The Colonials enter the game riding high off their 21-0 victory over defending District 3 Class 5A champion Cocalico last week.
QB Luke Frey threw a pair of long touchdown passes for New Oxford, while the Colonial defense forced three Cocalico turnovers and did not give up a single third-down conversion to the Eagles in 11 tries. They also became the first team to keep Cocalico off the scoreboard for four quarters since Lampeter-Strasburg, which posted the last shutout win over the Eagles on Sept. 26, 2014 (a 42-0 victory).
Frey finished 10-of-14 for 172 yards through the air, and his two TD throws covered distances of 42 and 70 yards (to Brayden Billman and Brody Holmes, respectively).
New Oxford now has two consecutive impressive victories to its credit; the Colonials dusted Bermudian Springs 28-13 in their season opener. Clayton Nieves had two TD runs for New Oxford in that game, while Frey had a 48-yard TD pass and a 1-yard TD run.
The Colonials are chasing their second consecutive Division 2 title in the YAIAA.
