Hershey Bears head coach to be away from team

The club announced Todd Nelson will be absent from the team.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Hershey Bears Head Coach Todd Nelson is going to be away from the team for family reasons.

The team made the announcement Monday.

The Bears have not said how long Nelson will be away from the club.

In his absence, assistant coaches Nick Bootland and Patrick Wellar will serve as co-head coaches.

Nelson is seventh all-time in AHL history with 413 coaching victories between Oklahoma City, Grand Rapids, and Hershey.

Sunday, Nelson earned his 104th victory with the Bears moving him into a three-way tie with Spencer Carbery and Gary Inness for 10th in club history.

Nelson has led the Bears to back-to-back Calder Cups in the past two seasons.
