BAPS Motor Speedway partners with Newberry Elementary School for 'Race into Reading' event

Racers spent the day with the local youth to promote reading alongside the thrill of racing.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — They’re a little young to get behind the wheel, but that’s the point... start them young!

“Our biggest thing is we want it to be fun and interactive for the kids," said Kolten Gouse, the BAPS Motor Speedway general manager, "So being in elementary school, they’re learning to read for the first time. My son is in first grade, this is kind of new for him to learn the path of reading. It’s important for us to be involved in the community.”

The Race Into Reading event is a fundraiser for the school.  BAPS even gathers local sponsors to pay for the T-shirts that are distributed to every single student.

“A lot of them last year, they’re counting down, they love it," said Jessica Pines, a Newberry Elementary kindergarten teacher. "They even have the shirts from last year, they loved wearing them all day, they’d change into them first thing when they would get here in the morning."

For the students, this event couldn't be more enjoyable.

"Racing into reading is really fun. Sometimes they bring in the bounce house, this year they have bee bots," said 4th grader Nathan Beard. "They’re like little robots that you can program to move around. They just have a lot of fun books, and toys and stuff, it’s just a lot of fun.”
