SALUNGA-LANDISVILLE, Pa. — The day after a game is meant for resting up and getting ready to start another game week.
But hours after kicking off under the Friday night lights, students from Ephrata were up early and getting ready for another game.
The United Disabilities Services Challenger Football and Cheerleading League is in the heart of its schedule and had a helping hand or hand-off from some of the Mountaineers.
"We scored two touchdowns and we got a fumble recovery," exclaimed a young Matthew who played for the Eagles team.
"The Ephrata players and cheerleaders were incredible. The parents and the coaches have to be so proud of them. They were just amazing," said Program Coordinator Teresa Wiedemer. "I'm trying to promote our program in the local high schools to get the high school players to come out and realize these kids just want to be accepted and just have fun."
The program, for people eight to 21 years old with different disabilities, has grown a lot over the years. Even those who volunteer find that it is just as rewarding for them.
"We learned a bunch of new cheers with the cheerleaders. We taught them some and they taught us some and we just had a great time all together," recalled Ephrata cheerleader Joslyn Copeland.
These young athletes keep everyone on their toes each Saturday morning.
"A couple of the football players said, 'Wow, I'm really tired,'" laughed Wiedemer. "I know, but it's really worth it."
"I think that we really wanted to raise awareness for the UDS challenge and by being here I think I got a great experience. I've never done something like this before," added cheerleader Madison Lausch.
The league heads into a bye week, as it'll be a part of the Millersville Parade this weekend. And if you're wondering whether or not they're ready...
"You bet I am," yelled Matthew.
