PERRY COUNTY, Pa. — Buzzers buzzed, whistles whistled, and coaches coached.
It's a scene that's familiar, but also new to high school wrestling fans in Pennsylvania.
For the first time, there was a PIAA girl's wrestling postseason tournament on Friday morning.
"It's an exciting day," said J.P. McCaskey Head Coach Kevin Franklin. "We've been waiting for and working towards it for many years. Sanction PA put in a lot of work to get this thing off the ground. History is going to be made today."
"It's really fun. I like wrestling girls. The environment is awesome," said ELCO wrestler Kylee Trostle. "The girls are so positive coming off the mat. You could lose or win and there are really no hard feelings. The girls are like, 'Great job, you did great.'"
But for some programs, the wait was longer than others. McCaskey was the first school in the state to have a girls' wrestling team.
"We bring that up just as a reminder but we don't want to overwhelm them with that aspect," said Franklin. "We want them to just wrestle and have a good time and perform to the best of their ability."
It's an event that's been worth the wait, but like any student-athletes, no one is content with just being able to compete.
"Honestly, to place at the girls' state tournament, to be the first one from Suburban in a long time to actually place at a PIAA-sanctioned event," said York Suburban's Alysiana Ierley.
The ones who qualified will have to wait a little longer for the regional next month at Penn Manor High School and then the ultimate prize, a trip to the Giant Center for the PIAA state championships.
