HARRISBURG, Pa. — Harrisburg's Rishon Sims has been very busy over the last year. His 2023 ended with a gold medal at the USA Boxing Nationals in Louisiana and the plans for 2024 have already begun.
"Something was on the line," said Sims. "So my mind was focused on coming out with a victory just for the future."
That future is very bright as he trains to return to the USA boxing training camp and hopefully fight in Youth Worlds for the country. The tournament is made up of the top boxers nationally from more than 90 countries.
"It means a lot but it kind of puts pressure on me," said Sims. "Because I got to get myself right in order to show others and it’s not just in boxing but in life."
The Capital Punishment Gym Fighter is back in the ring with his father and trainer Caludie Kenion at his side. Another big year could have him on track for the Olympics in 2028.
"It's a big thing for this area he is super humble and works really hard in the sport," said Kenion. "Team USA wants him to focus on the Olympics and that would be a deal and take him a long way."
Sims is constantly in the gym working on the nuances of his punches and footwork. The accolades have come quickly but he's humble about every victory and fight that's in front of him.
"I really can't put it into words because I didn’t see this coming in my future," said Sims. "All I can do is stay along for the ride."
