YORK COUNTY, Pa. — The high school football season is off and running with the heat acclimation period beginning this week.
Teams have been hard at work over the offseason, but now it's time to get back in the swing of things, with their first opponent being the heat.
"We have water with each position group, we have water in the locker room," said West York Head Coach Bob Miller. "We will provide fruit after each practice from watermelon to bananas... anything we can do to hydrate them."
The Bulldogs are one of the many teams working their way to full pads before the season gets started around two weeks from now.
"It's important for the whole team but it's probably a struggle for the lineman because they are bigger guys," said West York senior Wykeem Martin. "Even though they are not moving as much as us it's still important."
The heat acclimation period is something that at times can be unforgiving. The Bulldogs had to finish their practice with just helmets due to the high temperatures.
"The excitement is high at least on our end right now," said Miller. "Those are the guys grinding out every day but they are doing a great job."
The heat acclimation period lasts through the end of the week.
