Millersville off to best start in almost two decades | Sunday Sitdown

Casey Stitzel has built the Marauders into a contender.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — At 16-4 overall and 11-3 in PSAC play, the Millersville men's basketball team is enjoying their season, but this group is not content.

"We're playing well, but I'll be honest, I don't think we've peaked, yet," said Head Coach Casey Stitzel.  "And the other thing I would say, if I can give you coach lingo, we have a long way to go.  Teams can be red hot and then they can get cold really quickly. So I think for us, our biggest goal is to keep getting better."

On Wednesday, Millersville will host rival Shippensburg for a 7:30 PM tip-off.  Playing at Pucillo Gym is good news for the Marauders, who are 11-1 at home.

"I think we're just very comfortable here.  I think we do get a good turnout now that we've had success here last couple of years and it's just it's easier to play at home," added Stitzel.  You've got your family and friends here.  You have people you go to class with.  For me, I love seeing my two boys and my wife here.  My dad comes who's in the Hall of Fame here and is a Millersville grad."

With eight games left in the regular season, the Marauders are hoping for another return to March basketball.  A long postseason has gone from a goal to an expectation.  That makes it easier when it comes to recruiting.

"It was a lot harder eight years ago," recalled Stitzel.  "There's a lot of kids and a lot of families that did not want to take my phone call, you know?  Then we've got a great niche going with the DMV and Virginia, which is a hotbed of basketball.  We've had a lot of success there, which is now leading us to have other kids that are interested.  And then we have two very good Pennsylvania players who are dangerous and are two of the best post players."
