SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — This season has been one of perseverance for the Shippensburg Greyhounds softball team.
Earlier this year volunteer coach suddenly Dustin Sheffler passed away. It's a stinging loss the team has used to grow even closer and honor him with an unprecedented run thus far in states.
"That’s exactly what it is... perseverance," said head coach Jarrett Worthington. "We have an incredible group of girls. We showered them in love, gave them everything [they] needed that we could and it’s been incredible to watch them."
For the first time in 19 seasons, the Greyhounds are in the state quarterfinals. Following the tragedy it was the seniors who helped the team regroup and led them to a place that the former coach would be extremely proud of.
"All five of us seniors came together and wanted to bring everyone closer together," said senior pitcher Riley Muller. "I'm really sad that he's not here right now but I know he's looking down on us and really proud of all of us."
The Greyhounds have played with heavy hearts, never forgetting the lessons their late coach left them with.
"[We're] playing for something bigger, playing for a team, playing for Dustin for each other leads to success," said Worthington. "That is far more important than playing for me and playing for now."
The Greyhound's next challenge is their biggest one to date, taking on the District 3 5A champs South Western.
No matter how the season ends they can be proud of how far they have come.
"It's real exciting to be in this spot and keep playing and to be with all these girls," said Mullen. "I really enjoy my time here and hopefully end on a high note next week."
The Greyhounds will face off against South Western on Thursday at Cumberland Valley High School.
