YORK, Pa. — York College is the latest to burst onto the women's college wrestling scene.
This season marks the first year the school will debut a women's team to compete in multiple matches across the state. It's an exciting time for many of the wrestlers who thought they would never get the chance to compete on this level.
"I didn't think I was going to continue wrestling after high school, I only wrestled my senior year so I thought I was going to be one and done," said freshman Emma Lavalle. "Every day I'm in this school I'm just so thankful that I am able to go to wrestle and be a part of this opportunity,"
The team features five wrestlers from the York, Lancaster, Lebanon and Harrisburg areas. Led by head coach Duane Bastress, the team has already competed in their opening tournament at East Stroudsburg University and is looking to build off their first go-round.
"We definitely learned a lot as a team. [For] a lot of the girls, this is their first ever time wrestling freestyle so they were able to use it as a learning opportunity," said freshman Maura White. "We got ninth out of 22 so I think coming in brand new is a good feat for us."
The women's wrestling team will open up with their first home match on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
