YORK, Pa. — York County will be the center of the high school basketball world this weekend.
The York Suburban Trojans will be hosting their Hoops for Harmony showcase featuring over 30 schools locally and regionally with some of the top players in the area.
The showcase is more than just a hoops fest, led by Trojans Athletic Director Ron Coursey, the goal is to show that people of all different backgrounds can come together as one.
"We’re going to have an anti-racism pledge in which people that come in can choose to sign," said Coursey. "We want to send a message to the world that we are united and that we are together and that there is more that unites us than divides us."
Coursey is no stranger to big-time events. He hosted something similar during the football season with the York Rose Bowl which also featured top talent.
For the players, it's a special moment to play with an even bigger purpose on the birthday weekend of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"We just like to do our small part to make people happy, build community and build character," said senior center Luke Andricos. "There is way more important things in this world and to play this weekend knowing what Dr. King stood for is amazing."
Some of the schools feature regional powerhouses like St. Johns Catholic High School out of Washington D.C. and Westtown out of Chester. Is it a highly anticipated event with many top players.
Games will begin Friday, January 12 and will run through Sunday, January 14.
