WASHINGTON — Love them or hate them, the Commanders' all-black alternative jerseys are now firmly in the history books thanks to the incredible, improbable, still-on-repeat Hail Mary play to win the game against the Chicago Bears Sunday.
Since they were unveiled in 2022 the all-black alternative jerseys have gotten a lot of hate from fans on social media. Two years later, people's opinions haven't changed much. One big complaint is that they look too much like Pittsburgh Steelers uniforms.
Others say the black overshadows the team's primary colors.
"We are the burgundy and gold. The minuscule amount of burgundy on the black uniforms makes them a no for me," one Reddit user said.
Others who don't like the uniform say they should be retired after the Hail Mary play.
"Because it's never going to be better than this. Go out on top, know what I mean," another user said.
It's not all bad though. Sam Cosmi called the black uniforms "sleek and intimidating" when they were first rolled out. And some fans say have come around on the all-black, and winning changes everything.
"I hated them the first time I saw them. But the look has grown on me and I think they look dope. There’s something about black uniforms that go hard when your team is good. It’s instant intimidation," one fan said.
When could the Commanders see a uniform change? NFL rules state a team can only change up the fits every five years. Since the new uniforms came with the new name in 2022, we will have to wait until 2027 to see if the all-black alternates stick around.
For now, the Commanders will be back in black for one more game this season, in Week 13 against the Titans. Then, the team will rock white against the New York Giants on Sunday.
