KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have no shortage of ties to Pennsylvania.
General manager Brett Veach, a Mount Carmel High School grad, is in his seventh season with the Chiefs after following head coach Andy Reid to Kansas City from Philadelphia.
Two members of the team's training staff, vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder and assistant athletic trainer Julie Frymyer, hail from Carlisle and Lititz, respectively.
And another Central PA native, Manheim Central grad Matt Nagy, is in his second stint as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator under Reid.
Nagy returned to KC last season following a four-year stint as head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he went 34-31. He served as Reid's quarterbacks coach last year, helping Patrick Mahomes earn a NFL Most Valuable Player Award and a second Super Bowl title.
Following the departure of Eric Bienemy in the offseason, the Chiefs promoted Nagy to offensive coordinator for the second time.
During his first tenure, Nagy spent the 2016 working as co-coordinator alongside Brad Childress, who was eventually promoted to assistant head coach, allowing Nagy to take over the position by himself.
In 2017, Reid ceded play-calling duties to Nagy for the last five games of the season. The Chiefs went 4-1 and averaged more than 28 points per game during that span.
Nagy left for Chicago in 2018.
Before he got into the coaching profession, Nagy was a star quarterback at Manheim Central, going 26-2 during his career. He led the Barons to back-to-back District 3 titles and two straight appearances in the state semifinals in 1994 and 1995, but Central fell to perennial powerhouse Berwick both years.
Nagy then starred at the University of Delaware, leaving as the school's all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and QB rating. He played professionally for six years in the Arena Football League before moving into coaching in 2008, serving a one-year internship with Reid's Eagles.
Nagy spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Palmyra High School before taking a permanent role on Reid's staff in Philly.
And now, 15 years later, he's hoping to help Reid win his fourth Super Bowl title.
